Favorite KEEL Songs

RK - 5-4-2005 at 12:57 AM

A 'Best Of KEEL' collection may be in the cards for 2006...as was suggested on the other thread, post a list of your favorite KEEL songs here! I'll take the liberty of starting out...

1. "Rock N Roll Outlaw"
2. "Tears Of Fire"
2. "Evil Wicked Mean & Nasty"
3. "Dreams Are Not Enough"
5. "The Right To Rock"
6. "Calm Before The Storm"
7. "Reason To Rock"
8. "If Love Is A Crime (I Wanna Be Convicted)"
9. "Don't Say You Love Me"
10. "Nightfall"

AceZappa - 5-4-2005 at 01:11 AM

Speed Demon, for sure! You took several of the ones I would've thrown out. :P

RK - 5-4-2005 at 02:11 AM

It's impossible to be objective when you're as close to this music as I am. I chose songs that were both special to me personally AND which I still enjoy listening to.

They did a poll on the old KEEL website a few years ago and ranked the fan's favorite songs, and 'Speed Demon' was #1. I have a love/hate thing with that tune - it was the only KEEL song to be recorded 4 times for 3 seperate albums (US Metal IV, Lay Down The Law, & The Right To Rock). There was also a version recorded by my pre-Steeler band LUST. And I know if there's ever a KEEL reunion, I will be hearing those two words all night during every show...

If there was a 'Best Of', that song would probably have to rear it's ugly head...I would prefer the 'Lay Down The Law' version because it has the best vocal (this is the version that appeared in the movie 'Men In Black II').

AceZappa - 5-5-2005 at 03:06 AM

LOL, I didn't realize ya felt so negative about that song. It totally blew me away when I saw it in MIB II. I was like, "holy sh*t!! I know that song!" But, I can understand getting tired of a tune. I played in bands for a bit, and some of the songs we played got old too, and some I never liekd to begin with, but ya gotta play them when the fans (or other band members) do like them.

RK - 5-5-2005 at 03:01 PM

Hey Ace, I don't feel 'so negative' about the tune...keep in mind, LOVE is 50% of love/hate...

AceZappa - 5-5-2005 at 10:43 PM

LMAO, good point!:P

Darrin - 5-10-2005 at 02:04 AM

"Somebody's Waiting" has a nostalgic place with me, as I think it was the first KEEL song I ever really heard. Then I ended up playing it about 500 times over the next year in a band.

Of course, I already owned the STEELER album by then.....

And we can't forget "No Pain, No Gain".

Darrin - 5-17-2005 at 02:02 AM

Maybe we need a KEEL boxset with videos and music, or a Ron Keel boxset with music and videos spanning his musical career...
What does everyone else think?

depp - 5-17-2005 at 12:02 PM

PUT ME DOWN FOR A RON KEEL BOX SET , SOUNDS GREAT

depp - 5-17-2005 at 12:03 PM

I COULDN'T WRITE A LIST OF SONGS AS I LOVE THEM ALL IN DIFFERENT WAYS
THEY ALL HAVE A SPECIAL MEANING TO ME!!

SexyLeo75 - 5-17-2005 at 01:14 PM

I have to agree with what you have said depp. They are all awesome in one way or another. I do have to agree with a Ron Keel Box Set, how cool would that be?????

skynyrdmh - 5-17-2005 at 03:22 PM

there are way to many good KEEL songs to list. But I must say that a few stick out more than the others. Maybe it is because I hear them differently than what is on the CD's. For instance...take the first 26 seconds from the begining of United Nations and put it in front of Somebodys Waiting. But I also thought that Follow Your Heart should have made the cut for the IH CD (first time I heard it in the studio and still.....Ronnie knows why ;) )

Yea I know , I know.....my screwed up head does this sort of thing all the time :P

Still workin on MY list tho ;)

Craig - 5-26-2005 at 08:12 PM

I would certainly have to say the Calm Before the Storm, in my opinion, is Keel's best ballad. It certainly brings back many "good" memories for me during my teen years!

fetiche - 5-27-2005 at 12:53 AM

Dreams Are Not Enough and Private Lies

AceZappa - 5-27-2005 at 09:06 PM

I've been on a Keel kick lately. Was jamming Lay Down the Law and The Right To Rock today. In particular, on Lay Down the Law "Till Hell Freezes Over"... wow, what a great song! I always forget about that one until I listen to the album. Man, those lyrics are so poignant to me right now. It really hit home. :( Gonna play s/t and Final Frontier next. Man, so many fond memories...

SexyLeo75 - 5-28-2005 at 01:59 PM

Yes I so have to agree with you!! I get on those KEEL kicks as well and I just cannot get enough of the great music!!!!!!!! It is some awesome stuff that is for dang sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Indeed! It brings back such awesome memories, too. It's such a shame they never achieved the kind of success of some of their peers with lesser talent (and I'll be nice and leave out names, lol.) They had such a unique sound and some incredible songs. Of course, the same can be said of Ironhorse, too, though, lol.

Pinktiger27 - 6-2-2005 at 10:14 PM

Well I cant say any one song is the best cause they are all good and it depends on how I am feeling at any giving moment as to which one is my fav. You can sign me up for a box set too LOL .

deanplayer - 6-3-2005 at 03:17 AM

KEELAHOLIC71 - 5-31-2006 at 01:08 AM

I FORGOT...MY NEW FAVORITE KEEL SONG...DREAMS ARE NOT ENOUGH...RON, THIS IS AWESOME!!

blackhalo1 - 7-29-2006 at 09:32 PM

Better late than never--since I was not a member here when Ron brought the topic up...

I haven't listened to alot of the old stuff in years, and I can't play any LP's at the moment--but I did find all my old stuff on cassette which notably includes a pre-release promo of "Keel". So I busted out the tape player--and I've been listening to them again alot in the past few days since I joined--along with "Alone at Last" of course. A friend of mine said she'd transfer everything to CD for me, so I hope to do that soon. All I can say is OMG, what memories---I still can sing along with all of them! I'm totally relivin' my youth here--which is awesome since I'm 40 now. LOL! I'd gladly go back in time to see a Keel show again...*sigh*

Anyway, I'd pick these songs for a "Best of"...

Calm Before The Storm
Till Hell Freezes Over
Dreams Are Not Enough
Tears of Fire
Rock N Roll Outlaw
The Right To Rock
Somebody's Waiting
Rock And Roll Animal
Because the Night (should this count or not???)
Evil Wicked Mean & Nasty
Die Fighting
Private Lies
